Incident Report: #20190000001

Time: 20190804 – 0649 (PCT)

Location: W Mercer St & 3rd Ave W, Seattle, WA (47°37’30″N 122°21’37″W)

Situation: Our Emergency Response & Rescue Observations Resource Squadron (ERRORS) was dispatched to an office building with a report of brick settlement at an exterior walkway.

Observations: Differential paver settlement at brick grid interface. Approx 1″ horizontal separation. Approx 1/2″ vertical separation.

Assessment: High Danger Zone – The relatively innocent looking differential settlement could be related to a much more dangerous underlying issue – like a human munching sink hole. Though relatively rare, human munching sink holes do exist and are super dangerous if they are not immediately repaired.

Action: ERRORS quickly and efficiently cordoned off the brick settlement zone with cones and high visibility caution tape to reduce the likelihood of severe injury or death. The U.S. Geological Survey was contacted for further investigation and forensic analysis. ERRORS provided the building owner representative a safety & monitoring protocol pamphlet, and then walked across W Mercer St. to feast at KFC/Taco Bell.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
